DRIVING DOWN MARINE CRIME

14th September 2009

Crime Reduction Manager, Police Sergeant John Livingstone (pictured) is the driving force behind a clever scheme that aims to keep maritime equipment out of the hands of prying thieves. "Theft of small and medium size boat engines increase during the summer months" says Sgt Livingstone.

"Providing sound security advice and practical crime prevention materials is one of our neighbourhood priorities to help retain South Hams and West Devon's envied position as being of the safest in the country.

"Often, boat owners are not aware of the simple and cost effective security measure that they can take to avoid weeks of inconvenience and costly replacement of engines caused by marine thieves targeting local harbours. Up till now, there seems to be a viable market for second hand boat engines, but by working in partnership with local suppliers, the marine security packs aim to cut this out; making the engines of no value to would be thieves".

When boat owners moor up for the day, they simply have to remove the manufacturers engine cover and put on the temporary 'theft deterrent' cover, thus making the engine non-saleable. The outboard engine cover is clearly marked with the Devon and Cornwall Police and Selectadot logos, providing a high visibility deterrent to would-be thieves.

The marine security packs combine a specially made PVC outboard engine cover that's available in 3 sizes to suit small to medium size engines. Also included is Selectadot 'marking' equipment, application guides and access to a free 'Immobilise' database, accessible by the Police. Selectadot is a unique solution, encompassing microscopic dots that can be applied to marine equipment and accessories.

This simple method can prevent theft of outboard engines and other maritime items from boats in harbours and boat yards around the area. Each tube of solution has its own unique reference number, making all marked components identifiable under an ultra violet light. Microdots are readable with the aid of a microscope used by police.
"The marine theft-deterrent packs have provoked a lot of interest among boat owners, harbour masters, Boat Watch and other marine agencies, particularly around harbours including Dartmouth and Salcombe. Since its introduction, a large insurance company has shown a keen interest in the product. The packs are available to boat owners and marine suppliers at cost.
