Police Burgle Homes

August 27th 2009

In the quiet hours whilst most residents slept, Liverpool police officers tried to 'break into' some 3,500 homes to see if people actually locked up at night.

After testing front and back doors in burglary hotspots throughout Everton and Woolton and waking residents if they found doors are unlocked, they opened 66 doors and observed 14 open windows.

In this area there were 316 burglaries in just one month, nearly half the figure for the whole of Merseyside.

A police spokesperson said that people who had been woken up after leaving their door open have, on the whole, given a positive response, despite the initial shock and rude awakening.

One person said: "It gave me a terrible shock, but it is such a good idea.

"It has made me much more aware of making sure I lock the door.

"My son had been out and he'd left the door unlocked."

The following Police community support officers will visit the property to issue crime prevention advice.

The police spokesperson added: "Particularly vulnerable premises are 'target hardened' with window alarms, door alarms, locks and crime prevention tools like SmartWater."
