ACPO (The Association Of Chief Police Officers) recommends property marking products and suppliers via its SecuredbyDesign scheme which satisfy their stringent criteria. Kits cost in the range of £15 which generally include warning labels to would be thieves.

It may be worth checking with your local police Crime Prevention Officer to see if there are any ongoing initiatives which would enable you to avoid paying or whether the local police are working more with any particular "securedbydesign" property marking product in your area.

UV pen marking

The principle with UV pen marking is that you mark your postcode followed by the house number or you could add your name and phone number on the property with the UV pen. The mark is invisible to the naked eye.

Whilst UV pens are relatively cheap, it is essential that you display stickers so check to see if deterrent stickers are supplied with the pen to advertise the fact that property is marked. Police have access to UV lights which show up postcodes etc.Pens 5p to £1 or so.

Photography

Taking photographs of property as detailed as possible is recommended for reconciliation/prosecution of offender purposes, particularly if it is not property marked.
